Top 9 Tips for getting stuff done even when you don’t feel like it

Feeling unmotivated? Overwhelmed by that never-ending list of stuff to do and no time in which to do it?
Published 6.13.2023

Here are 9 simple strategies you can employ individually or together to help you get those things done!

Set Realistic Goals

Clearly define what you want to achieve and break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. This way, you can focus on completing one task at a time, which can be less overwhelming and more achievable.

Build a Routine

Establishing a structured schedule can provide a sense of direction and make it easier to get started on tasks. Set specific times for working on different activities and stick to the schedule as much as possible.

Find the Why

Reflect on the reasons why the task is important or meaningful. Understanding the purpose behind what you're doing can help reignite motivation and start the ball rolling. If you can overcome inertia, momentum may carry you the rest of the way!

Break Tasks into Smaller Chunks

If a task feels overwhelming, break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Bishop Desmond Tutu once said, “There is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.”

Use Proven Time Management Methods

Try something like the Pomodoro Technique, where you work for a set period (e.g., 25 minutes) and then take a short break. Breaking your work into smaller, focused sessions can make it more manageable and less likely to lead to burnout.

Find Accountability and Support

Share your goals and progress with a friend, family member, or colleague who will support your efforts and hold you accountable to it. This typically works best as a two way street; don’t be surprised if you get motivated yourself by helping to motivate others.

Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, even the small ones. I’m guilty of focusing too much on my shortcomings and rarely thinking about the things I have accomplished. Focusing on the wins is a great way to reinforce the idea that you can do it, because you’ve already done things you thought you couldn’t before.

Eliminate Distractions

Put away your phone, close unnecessary tabs on your computer, and create a dedicated workspace that is free from distractions. There are some great focus tools you can use on your phone, computer, even smartwatches to help keep you on task.

Practice Self-Care

Get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, exercise regularly, and make time for activities you enjoy. When you take care of yourself, your capacity to get work done is incalculable; think about what happens when you don’t.

Remember, motivation will fluctuate, some days you’ll wake up ready to take on the world while other days you wake up ready to take up space on the couch. It's natural and normal to experience ups and downs, the strategies outlined here should help you build the discipline necessary to get stuff done when motivation eludes you.
